Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally grows inside the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus, causing pain, irregular periods, and other symptoms.

The exact cause of endometriosis is not yet known, but some theories suggest that it may be due to:

  • Retrograde menstrual flow: When menstrual blood containing endometrial cells flows back into the pelvic cavity instead of out of the body through the vagina.
  • Immune system dysfunction: A problem with the immune system that fails to recognize and destroy endometrial tissue that’s growing outside the uterus.
  • Lymphatic or blood vessel spread: Endometrial cells may spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or blood vessels.
  • Embryonic cell growth: Residual tissue from embryonic cells that should have formed in the uterus instead forms into endometrial tissue in other parts of the body.
  • Surgery-related causes: Endometriosis has been reported to develop after surgeries such as caesarean delivery, hysterectomy, and others.

Effects of endometriosis on menstrual health:

  1. Painful periods: Women with endometriosis often experience severe menstrual cramps, as well as pain in the lower back, abdomen, and pelvis.
  2. Irregular periods: Endometriosis can cause irregular and heavy periods, as well as prolonged bleeding.
  3. Infertility: Endometriosis can cause infertility by interfering with the normal function of the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and uterus.
  4. Fatigue: The pain and discomfort associated with endometriosis can lead to fatigue and decreased energy levels.

Treatment for endometriosis depends on the severity of the condition and may include medications, such as hormonal therapy or pain relievers, or surgery to remove the endometrial tissue. It’s important to work with a healthcare professional to determine the best course of treatment for your individual needs.
